For those who stay around the Lakes Region during New Hampshire’s long, cold winters, there are some stark choices. If you love winter and have the wherewithal to enjoy its pleasures, there’s a lot to do: skate at of the region’s closed rinks, take to the slopes of the many local ski areas, or head for one of the area’s many nearby cross-country ski trails. Then there’s snowmobiling and, for the hardiest, ice fishing.
But what if you’re not inclined to outdoor cold-weather recreation? Is there anything that takes advantage of winter conditions without exposing you to the season’s frigid conditions?
Well, there is now! The Lakes Region Curling Association (www.lakescurlingnh.org) is in the process of organizing and planning its first league schedule for Fall 2015. In the meantime, the organization is recruiting members and working on the logistics of some learn-to-curl sessions and even team organizing for the springtime.
When it’s fully up and running, the LRCA will play at Pop Whalen Arena in Wolfeboro, NH. It’s hoped that membership enrollments will enable the organization to offer at least two — but maybe even three — sheets for concurrent matches when the planned Fall league starts.
Watch the LRCA web site for announcements about an informational open house and learn-to-curl signup come April.
